Today I’m wearing Nuit Noire by Mona di Orio. It features the top notes of orange flower, cardamom, ginger, orange guinee; heart notes of oliban, cinnamon, tuberose, sandalwood, clove, cedarwood, and base notes of amber, leather, musk, and tonka bean. Now let me tell you what it smells like when I first srpay it on. It smells like rotting oranges. This is the most diplomatic description I was able to come up with. My husband, however, once flat out said it smelled like dirty diapers. Now, why would anybody in their right mind want to wear a perfume of such inappropriate nature? For me, it was the luxurious drydown. Yes, I’m willing to put up with the first thirty minutes or so of this indecency for the sake of a knockout drydown.
Nuit Noire is a deep, animalic, succulent floral oriental with an excellent staying power. It’s a gutsy scent - not something I could wear often. I tend to exercise caution around it since it does have the potential to be an irrevocably wrong scent for the day. I almost doubted my choice this morning and hid my wrists in my pockets while in the elevator for fear of being banned from the building. My fears are gone now, and I’m enjoying its unmistakably genuine beauty.
Nuit Noire can be purchased from Aedes and The Perfume Shoppe. For more retailer information, please check the Mona di Orio web page.

Today I’m wearing Montale Powder Flowers. I don’t know what it is with me and Montale lately but I’m rediscovering the line and finding new loves. Powder Flowers falls into the category of my most wearable perfumes. It has the notes of Damask rose, jasmine, osmanthus, cedar, and tonka beans. It’s a powdery floral but not overwhelmingly so. It starts out slightly sharp, with rose and jasmine prevalent in top notes. It quickly settles down, with osmanthus coming into play and turning it into a hazy, feathery floral. The drydown is very soft and elegant and airy.
Powder Flowers can be purchased at Suravionline, Aedes, Parfumsraffy, Four Seasons Products, and directly from the Montale shop.

Today I’m wearing Oeillet Sauvage by L’Artisan Parfumeur. It’s a gorgeous creamy, slightly spicy carnation. The description on the L’Artisan site says, “Piquant and vivacious, the perfume of wild carnations is generous and flowering. Pepper is combined with pink berries to tame the exuberance whilst preserving the carnation’s sensuality. Then, with the notes of spice and vanilla, the carnation sweetly overwhelms us… for even greater pleasure!” It’s not overly sweet or fruity, and if it does overwhelm me it’s in a good way.
Sadly, the scent is said to be discontinued but there’s still remaining stock left at the L’Artisan online shop, Escentual, and Four Seasons Products.

Today I’m wearing Aoud Damascus by Montale. Oh, how I love this! One of my favorite rose perfumes ever. I wasn’t able to find much information about the notes, other than the general description: “All the refinement of the Arabian Aoud, associated with acidulous Damascan roses, enhanced by Oliban pearls and sparkling Gurgum.” Forgive me for my ignorance, but what exactly “sparkling Gurgum” is? I mostly smell a sultry combination of rose and aoud but it’s not sharp or medicinal. It’s soft and well-rounded, with a slight metallic undertone. It’s unlike any other rose perfume I’ve smelled. It has an excellent staying power and not so excellent price.
Aoud Damascus is available at Suravionline, Aedes, Parfumsraffy, The Perfume Shoppe, and directly from Montale online shop.

Today I’m wearing my favorite Ginger Ciao perfume oil by Yosh Han. It has the notes of black coconut, tiger lilly, neroli, ylang-ylang, ginger, and basil. I’ve tried several coconut fragrances, and I must say Ginger Ciao surpasses them all. First of all, it’s a perfume oil, and I don’t favor oils mostly because they tend to turn on my skin after about fifteen minutes. This one doesn’t only turn but actually develops om my skin and stays on for hours. Secondly, the notes are masterfully blended. Ginger and basil are softened by ylang-ylang with a warm accord of coconut. It’s predominantly a coconut scent, with just a slight twinge of ginger and a suntan lotion feel. Perfect for hot summer days!
Ginger Ciao is available at Luckyscent, La Creme Beauty, and Breathe Spa. For more retailers, please check Eau de Yosh.

Today I’m wearing Brulure de Rose by Parfumerie Generale, a rose scent with notes of amber, raspberry, musk, vanilla, and cocoa. Marina at Perfume-Smellin’ Things has already done an excellent job describing the scent here. Rose Brulure is a sweet and slightly syrupy, liqueur-like rose, along the lines of Parfums de Nicolai Balkis minus the peppery iris. It can be purchased directly from the Parfumerie Generale online shop.

Today I’m wearing Rive Gauche eau de toilette by Yves Saint Laurent. This is a new discovery for me, in spite of the fact that I’ve known about the scent for as long as I can remember. The notes are: aldehydes, bergamot, lemon, leafy green, rose, jasmine, gardenia, honeysuckle, vetiver, tonka bean, sandalwood, oakmoss. I’m not going to say much more other than invite you to read a wonderful review written by Victoria on Bois de Jasmin.

Today I’m wearing the newly reissued Mille & Une Roses by Lancome, one of the very few rose perfumes I can wear. It’s a gorgeous dusty rose softened by amber. I haven’t smelled anything quite like it. Perhaps, Stella by Stella McCartney could be its very distant cousin. At this point, the fragrance is available at the Lancome site, 50 ml eau de parfum that retails for $125. I’ve also seen it in my local Saks.

Today I’m wearing L’Instant parfum by Guerlain. The notes are: mandarin, bergamot, magnolia, jasmine, ylang-ylang, iris, vanilla, benzoin, musk, amber. I must say I only prefer this in the parfum concentration as both eau de toilette and eau de parfum are too sharp on my skin. The parfum, however, is smooth and creamy, stays close to skin and makes me feel pretty.

Today I am wearing my beloved Lipstick Rose. Basically, it smells like lipstick. The notes are: rose, violet, vetiver, musk, and vanilla. I don’t think I’ve ever found a perfume that is just so perfect in every way - the combination of notes, their development, the lasting power, the bottle, the price (OK, maybe not the price). If I could marry perfume, I would marry Lipstick Rose.
Lipstick Rose can be purchased from the Frederic Malle online shop, Les Senteurs, and Barney’s New York.
