I don’t know if you have days like this but for the past week or so I’ve hated all my perfumes. As in, “get away from me I don’t want to see you right now”. I know it’ll pass, it always does. On top of everything the two fragrances I’ve been super curious to try (Kelly Caleche by Hermes and Strip by Agent Provocateur) slightly infuriated me for their lack of performance (more about that in my next post). So to perk things up a bit, Marina and I are doing another joint project of tagging each other: “If this was a perfume, what perfume would it be?”

1. Paintings

Mit Und Gegen by Wassily Kandinsky - Harissa by Comme des Garcons. Hot, fiery spices.

Boy on Mt. Fuji by Hokusai Katsushika - Bois Farine by L’Artisan Parfumeur. Warm, milky woods.

La Primavera by Sandro Botticelli - Femme by Rochas. Lush and deeply carnal.

2. Movies

Bridget Jones’s Diary (the first one) - Pink Sugar. Nuff said.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark - hmm, I’ll go with Dzing! by L’Artisan Parfumeur.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - one of my absolute favorite movies. I’m thinking Muscs Koublai Khan by Serge Lutens - complex, twisted, and heart-warmingly down-to-earth.

3. Celebrities

Pamela Anderson - Rumba by Balenciaga. Obnoxious, with a dirty side, and a twisted appeal.

Clark Gable - Antaeus by Chanel. Classic and a tad rebellious.

Alanis Morissette - Noir Epices by Frederic Malle. Beauty with an edge.

4. Outfits

Valentino Fall 2007 Haute Couture - Clive Christian X For Women.

Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2007 Haute Couture - Eau des Merveilles by Hermes.

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2007 Ready-To-Wear - Jaipur Saphir by Boucheron.

Wonderful choices. Preparation Parfumee was, for some reason, the first thing I thought of for the Katsushika print.

Love the Dzing! for Indiana Jones - perfect! Excellent pairings for all.

Well done! And the studio still of Gable is wonderful - he could say more with an eybrow than so many modern actors can say with words…

Love all the choices, but Dzing! for IJ is absolutely spot on perfect I think! As is Noir Epices for Alanis. Bravo!

Wonderful choices and pictures (I love the Kandinksy!) When I saw Harrison/IJ I first thought “Kolnisch Juchten,” but, as everyone has said, Dzing works beautifully!

I very much enjoyed your post, but even more your no-perfume mood. I find these times quite interesting, when you go back to your deepest favourites 1 to 3 scents - in contrast with the passionate perfume race! Whenever I feel “blasée”, I go on a Chanel 19 or a Miss Dior diet, before I’m ready to move into the scent universe again. What would your “forever scents” be?

What fun Ina! I’m in the same perfume mood lately, it seems. I wake up every morning and just will myself to like anything, it seems. Makes for interesting sampling, I tell you!

Leo, yes, I can see that, although it’s a bit too transparent for this picture as it seems to me. My other choice was Annayake Miyako.

Donna, thank you! Dzing! is such a versatile scent, isn’t it.

Rosarita, you’re so right! What a perfect way of putting it, too.

  • 12. Ina  |  August 6th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Marina, thanks! You made me work a little hard there. ;)

  • 13. Ina  |  August 6th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Judith, KJ would be my other choice, yes.

  • 14. Ina  |  August 6th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Aliki, exactly what I do, too! I’ve been going back to my favorite Guerlains lately - Rose Barbare, Cuir Beluga… those I never get tired of. Same goes for Lipstick Rose or Vetiver Extraordinaire.

Greeneyes, sampling is another great way of passing this stage, although pretty much everything I’ve sampled lately has left me underwhelmed.

Chan, thank you! We shall see. We seem to like our joint projects, too, so you’ll definitely see more of those. :)
