Perfume Review: Bill Blass Fragrance

February 19th, 2007

Bill BlassBill Blass Spring 2007 Ready To Wear collection has made quite a favorable impression on me. If I had to use one word to charecterize it, I’d say Elegance. I’ve always valued elegance and have often bemoaned its absence in today’s fashion trends as well as what I see women wear. Elegance to me is tasteful simplicity. It doesn’t require posh fabrics, fancy hairdos or diamonds. It’s just that - simple and effective, tastefully. Bill Blass fragrance is all about elegance. It caught me by surprise as, to be honest, I was expecting to smell yet another fruity floral (I know, I know, I complain about them enough). Its restrained beauty is very much in line with the Bill Blass spring collection - effortless, graceful, and polished.

Bill Blass renders elegance in a seemingly simple interplay of galbanum, hyacinth, and lily of the valley. Apart from the initial sparkle of neroli, the scent is quite linear and a touch aldehydic. It’s the resurrection of the 70s or their modern interpretation, bringing to mind such scents as Fidji by Guy Laroche, Ivoire by Balmain, Silences by Jacomo. It is the scent of sheer, glossy fabrics and pastel colors. Bill Blass is a perfect scent to welcome spring - its luminous character makes you think happy thoughts. I don’t see myself wearing it yet, simply because I have not developed a strong enough taste for galbanum and hyacinth based scents. I do recommend trying it, however. It might be an instant love for you.

Bill Blass features the notes of neroli, galbanum, green mandarin, white hyacinth, lily of the valley, tuberose, jasmine. It can be purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue.

To illustrate the perfect outfit for Bill Blass, here’s one from their Spring collection:

Can we have some require posh fabrics, fancy hairdos and diamonds? *whines*

Seriously though, this sounds wonderful Lily of the valley!

Marina, you can have all the posh fabrics, fancy hairdos, and diamonds you want but not in the Elegance world. ;) Read it as “my world”. Sigh. I’m way too practical. Sigh again.

    What a great review !

This man always knew how to dress women with style , grace, and verve. His fragrances were gutsy [but classic]…is this one of these ?

Also, he was quite a character to work with, apparently, and very tight with Oscar de lLa Renta…
Both were referred to as ‘the sexiest men alive’ by my mama’s best friend [now deceased] who was Blass’ personal secretary…

    Sounds like a sniff !

This sounds promising! Could it be a designer fragrance is actually pretty good again and a little different and NOT a fruity floral? Holy spritzer, Batman, it could be a trend!

Elegant simplicity - my idea of fashion heaven. Well, w/ the addition of some posh fabrics and a few well done accessories. :-) I quite like the bottle. Despite not being a huge fan of hyacinth or lotv scents, I’m still willing to give this a try since the original, d/ced eponymous scent had similar notes and I adored it - a fantastic green scent.

Not sure how I feel about glabanum and hyacinth, but how refreshing that they didn’t go the fruity-floral route! I love the bottle.

Chaya, wow, how fascinating! I knew close to nothing about him until I tried the scent (did a little reading online). I wouldn’t call this gutsy. More ladylike and very springlike.

Patty, my thoughts exactly! I even wondered if perhaps they’re bringing the 70s back? After all, galbanum hasn’t been the top note for a long time now.

Elle, I’ve never smelled the original. The bottle is indeed very pretty. I just think it’s a success overall.

Have you head of Floris Night Jasmine? My girlfriend mentioned it the other day-should I get her a bottle?

Jersey Guy, I haven’t had a chance to smell Night Jasmine yet. If she loves it, why not? ;)
