Scent Revival

February 6th, 2007

Marina did a great post yesterday on “scent cemetery”, i.e., scents she no longer loves. To piggy-back on her idea (since my nose’s still malfunctioning), I’ve come up with a list of scents I used to hate/dislike and now adore. Here’re a few:

  • Muscs Koublai Khan by Serge Lutens
  • Miss Dior by Christian Dior
  • Messe de Minuit by Etro
  • Mitsouko by Guerlain
  • Opium by Yves Saint Laurent
  • 1000 by Jean Patou

What are yours?

What?? MKK?! I knew about the others, but had somehow missed that you had ever turned your nose up at MKK.
I find that I’ve mostly turned away from gourmands (Rahat, Ambre Narguile, etc….sadly sent to RIP) and most citrus scents (w/ the exception of Bigarade Concentree).

I can’t think of a single one that I hated and now adore, but there are a few that I was meh about that I now like:

    Ava Luxe Angel Face
    LV Musk
    YR Voile D’Ambre

That Ambre Russe Marina was always going on about. I thought it was poison the first time I smelled it; now I really like it!

This is tough. Like Elle, it usually works the other way round for me (though she can send any amount of Ambre Narguilé my way…)

Aaah, just thought of one. Un Bois Sepia… First time I smelled it - two years ago? - I thought it was a generic men’s scent and definitely nothing special. Now, it’s become wonderful - like a more refined, less sweet Rocabar (though they are pretty divergent in the dry down).

I never revive :-( If I loved them and fell out of love with them, it’s all over, forever and ever :-( Now, if I *disliked* something at first, I might come to love it.

Bandit! But that’s because I was so very very green when I first tried it. I got the usual musty/sour/stale/sharp generic old ladies perfume. Now I’m beginning to learn to appreciate the vintage classics, the acquired tastes, and the other day when I fancied retrying it I loved it.

    Ambre Sultan
    Shalimar
1000, too (and I discovered that I love osmanthus!)

But, like Marina, once it’s over with a fragrance, it’s over, dead, done.

    Hugs!

BTW I just heard from a friend in Chicago — the weather sounds GHASTLY — are you okay?

  • 9. parisa  |  February 6th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

    My RIP file includes:

    Chanel 5
    TM Angel
    KM White Petals
    YSL Opium
    Etro Etra
    SL Musc

Also, once a scent gives me a migraine, it’s permanently removed from my good/pleasant smelling list and all of the above have done that:(

I really hated Angel when I first smelled it. Then I got to know someone on whom it was divine. I still am not crazy about it, but I don’t despise it anymore.

I was not thrilled with MKK when I first smelled it. It took a few tries for it to wham me. Now of course I adore it.

    No.5
    Miss Dior
    Jasmin Full
    Diorissimo

Where can I buy Muscs Koublai Khan? I did a google search and all I could find was tiny decants on ebay. Is there somewhere I could get a regular sized bottle? Thanks for any info.

  • 13. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Elle, yes, MKK! Can you believe it? Can’t live without it now.

  • 14. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Minsu, LV Musk was the same story for me. I don’t reach for it much these days but I do find it appealing.

  • 15. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

March, Ambre Russe poison?? No words.

  • 16. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Leo, Un Bois Sepia was dismissed by me instantly. Hmm, maybe I should revisit it. Stil need to retest Rocabar.

  • 17. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Marina, maybe revival wasn’t the best word to use. I meant more like I don’t revive them, they sort of get reborn for me. ;)

  • 18. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Solander, Bandit is definitely one of those scents that will play tricks on you. Must revisit it myself.

  • 19. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Robin, Shalimar for me as well. In parfum only, though.

  • 20. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

March, the weather is WICKED. I stay inside as much as possible. But still not over my cold.

  • 21. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Parisa, migraines definitely do kill a scent, don’t they. They killed Flowerbomb for me - cannot stand it now.

  • 22. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Tom, Angel smells the best on others, I think. ;)

  • 23. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

    Nez, love your list!

  • 24. Ina  |  February 6th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Lawgoddess, MKK can only be purchased directly from the shop in Paris. They do ship within Europe but not to the U.S., unfortunately. But you can have someone ship it to you from Europe, of course. The shop’s web address is:
    www.salons-shiseido.com

Florals, believe it or not. The hormonal changes surrounding pregnancy changed my sniffer, for good it seems. The dark, dusky, spicy, and incensey scents are too much, but florals seem just right. As a result, I’ve rediscovered Caron Bellodgia, plus other new rose-based florals that will be perfect for spring (Bond 9 West Side and POTL A*MAZE).

  • 26. Ina  |  February 7th, 2007 at 12:17 pm

Kris, good to see you here! :)
A*Maze will be my spring scent as well, and I must run and test Bellodgia!

    Feminité du Bois
    Musc Ravageur
    Ambre Précieux

All of the above scared me to begin with. Maybe I didn’t hate them, but I just didn’t know fragrances could smell like that when I first encountered them. My love is now way beyond health for all of them.

  • 28. Jeanne Marie Auclair  |  March 3rd, 2007 at 7:36 pm

    Miss Dior
    Chanel No. 5
Guerlain’s Mitsouko (stinky toe scent, but I am trying to find the beauty)
    YSL’s Rive Gauche
    Un Bois Vanille
