Article on Les Exclusifs de Chanel
January 30th, 2007
My major perfume anticipation at the moment is the new Chanels due to come out this February. The subject has already been discussed in perfume blogosphere but I was quite fascinated to see yet another article in the February issue of the W magazine, “Hot Coco” (page 138). Just wanted to share a few bits and pieces that made me go all atwitter. Jacques Polge, the perfumer of Chanel, said in reference to No.18, one of the new scents, “there’s never been anything that smells like this, and maybe there never will be again”. No.18 features a rare ingredient, ambrette seed, and Polge describes the scent as “musty, dusty” and “dry”. Five of the six fragrances are named after places and things from the life of Coco herself. 31 Rue Cambon (the address of Coco’s couture atelier), for instance, is “a surprisingly spicy, patchouli-based scent with hints of rose and jasmine”. Coromandel is “a blend of amber and wood with an unexpected hit of creamy vanilla”, inspired by the Chinese screens that Madame Chanel had in her apartment. Bel Respiro (named after Coco’s country house), is a “very stemmy” fragrance (love the description!). 28 La Pausa (inspired by Cote d’Azur) - a powdery iris scent. “Iris extract - which is taken from the root other than the flower - is one of the fragrance world’s least-used ingredients because of the large number of plants that must be harvested in order to obtain a single drop”. Finally, Eau de Cologne is made in the French tradition of unisex, neroli-based colognes, with added notes of musk and vetiver. Such amazing sounding scents, and 6 of them! I’m already losing my sleep.
The fragrances will be available at Chanel boutiques only, as far as I know. They will be priced at $175 for 200 ml.

Ooooo, as predicted, that No. 18 is just sounding better all the time. I’m going to be mucho disappointed if it’s meh. Coromandel is my back-up favourite.

I’m biting nails, and drooling…
Assuming they’re available at the boutique, I’ll be sniffing them in no time…

This does not make me happy. At all. Except for the EdC, it’s sounding like I will need all of these. It’s sounding like death knells for my budget, for any sort of financial solvency, for living under a roof….

Welcome to my world, Elle !
Wanna be homeless together?
At least, we’ll be the good-smelling kind, lol…

We have two Chanel boutiques, and I was thrilled to realize when I called them that they’ve managed to carry their boutique b!tch attitude into the fashion hinterland that is D.C. (although Chanel fits right in here.) Both SAs snarled that they don’t carry Chanel perfumes and hung up on me… BTW the current Allure, believe it or not, has a well-written, multi-page article on these in the back of the mag. I am so excited to try them.

Ooh! No. 18, Bel Respiro and 28 La Pausa sound amazing.
I am not a huge Chanel fan, but I must admit: I can’t wait to try all of these!
Hugs!

LOL at March’s Chanel experience. Too true. However, I found a lovely Chanel SA recently in Bergen, Norway. I know this sounds cocky, but the people I was with (who, at the time, knew very little about my proclivities) were convinced she was giving me more attention than was strictly necessary. Hubba hubba.
Yes, Leopoldo was a hit with the Nordic beauties…
Anyway, back on topic. I’m more and more excited by no. 18. I should have ordered decants from Patty, dagnabit.

Tigs, I agree! They all sound good to me. I’m hoping I won’t be disappointed but then again, they’re so pricey!

Chaya, my sentiments and hopes exactly!
10. Ina | January 30th, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Elle, you and I are in the same boat here… hopefully, decants will be available.

March, unbelievable! Now I have to walk over to mine to make sure they do/will. Hrmph!
Yes, got that Allure magazine too.

Robin, they all sound more than promising!

Leo, I’m all for going to Bergen! Sigh. But you *are* a hit with Nordic beauties.
Ahem.
Doesn’t Patty still have them available?

I was fortunate enough to visit a Chanel Boutique in Las Vegas. I mostly wear Chanel fragrance, Allure, No. 5, En Fluer, Madamosille. As I walked thru the boutique I noticed a scent unfamiliar to me, but very, very Chanel. I discovered the new Exclusifs line, I WAS IN HEAVEN!!! The scent that trapped me was Coromandel. That scent now sits with my Louisville based collection of Chanel scents. YUMMY.
