Perfume Review: Oiro by Mona di Orio

January 24th, 2007

OiroOiro is the newest creation by Mona di Orio, a French perfumer whose work is inspired by the legendary Edmond Roudnitska (she was also his apprentice). Portuguese for “gold”, the scent is indeed woven in golden, yellow hues. Her other creation, Nuit Noire, was what introduced me to the line, instantly winning me over with its seductive, indolic floral heart. I detect the same base in all of Mona di Orio scents - dirty, animalic, borderline unpleasant, yet inexplicably appealing. Oiro very much continues in the same vein, with perhaps one exception - it has a sheer, translucent character.

In spite of such an array of substantial notes - green mandarin, sweet pea, spices, jasmine, Oliban, heliotrope, vetiver, ylang-ylang, immortelle, cedarwood, musk, amber - Oiro touches my skin with soft jasmine and shimmering citrus. The blend is so intertwined it’s hard to say if I smell more jasmine or mandarin. The velvety, slightly spicy heart has that same indolic, sultry backdrop of Nuit Noire. Oiro is a luminous, exhilarating scent. Composed chic, just like this Versace dress:

Versace Spring 2007

Oiro is currently available at Auz Liebe Zum Duft. It’s expected to arrive at Aedes in the near future.

As you know, this may be destined to receive my “Jasmine of the Millenium” award. That dress reflects it perfectly.

Oh, this sounds like just the ticket. That NN base is the filthiest thing — stumbled across my decant for a sniff the other day and burst out laughing. How much (if any) immortelle are you getting? I’m in love with that note right now…

This sounds wonderful! I am slightly worried about the citrus, but it sounds like it’s not too much for me (the dress, though, while beautiful, would be too yellow:) Another must-try!!

BTW, I have fallen behind on my packages. Yours (and AnnE’s –in case she’s reading) will go out tomorrow. So sorry!

Love the comparison to the dress! Can’t wait for Oiro to arrive at Aedes, it would great for spring-summer.

If it’s as lovely as that dress, I must try it, despite my worry, like Judith, about the citrus.

Ina, that dress is stunning. And, the color!!! Being a man can be so borring.

I’m more worried about the jasmine, but I’m still going to report for duty in Aedes as soon as it’s there. The dress is stunning. The color is exactly my thing.

Oh…what a gorgeous dress! Although I think I’d like it better on a darker-complected woman. That shade of yellow/gold is so hard for most blondes to pull off properly.

As to the Oiro, jasmine and citrus with a naughty frisky base sounds like just my thing. I’ll be watching for this one.

Chaya, yes, just like the dress. :) Thanks! It’s supposed to be really cold this wknd.

Elle, I’m falling more and more in love with it, too.

March, I get none. For real! I was looking for it but it never showed up.

Judith, not too much citrus. At some stage it almost reminds me just a tad of Le Labo Tubereuse. I get a similar feel from the jasmine and citrus. This one’s way more sultry, though.

Marina, yes! I’m also enjoying it in this freezing weather.

  • 15. Ina  |  January 24th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Minsun, it’s a definite must-try! Gorgeous, simply stunning.

Kelley, at least you don’t have to wear tights… ;)

  • 17. Ina  |  January 24th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Gaia, I’m not sure when it’ll be at Aedes but do try it when you get a chance. I can’t do this kind of yellow, alas, but it looks so gorgeous on the right person!

Teri, that shade would be hard to pull off on darker haired people, methinks. I think it could either wash you out or make you look old. But such a gorgeous color! Do try Oiro.

I love Nuit Noire…I’m going to have to try this. It sounds wonderful!
