Perfume Review: A.Maze by People of the Labyrinths

January 21st, 2007

A.MazeA.Maze is the second fragrance that comes to us from the hip Dutch fashion house - People of the Labyrinths. Its predecessor, Luctor et Emergo, is anything but boring, and, while not appealing to all, is truly one of a kind, unconventional creation. Needless to say, A.Maze came into existence faced with great expectations and hopes to demonstrate the same amount (if not more) of creativity, innovation, and edge. But let me be more specific: A.Maze does not disappoint. I’m still at the point of evaluating it’s amazingness factor but one thing you can be sure of - it is not a maze.

A.Maze supposedly took five years to make, and from what we know it contains 100% natural ingredients (I’m always hesitant to mention such a fact as it’s often not the case). In spite of the claim, it doesn’t quite “strike a somewhat lighter note”, mostly due to the fact it’s predominantly a rose scent, spiced up with saffron to boot. In its character, it’s very much along the lines of Aoud Roses Petals by Montale, except the medicinal, metallic rose is replaced by “meaty”, jam-like rose. The drydown is much softer and less intense, with the rose-saffron fling still going strong, and just a touch of sandalwood and musk. Overall, A.Maze is an excellent perfume but one that takes some warming up to (which I’m presently experiencing).

A.Maze features the notes of henna, saffron, Taif rose, orange blossom, Wardia rose, agarwood, sandalwood, musk, civet.

The scent is currently on pre-order at Beautyhabit and Luckyscent.

Luckyscent is doing a promo on A.Maze - get free shipping on the fragrance with the code “amaze”.

    Thanks, babe, for the sniff…
Just curious- why did you need to warm up to it ?
    Too rosey? Not woody enough?
Lots of buzz about this one…
Compared to the Montale, and the Eau Suave?

Well, I have some coming in the mail–I do like the Montale a lot, so we shall see.

Am very relieved it doesn’t strike a lighter note! If it is like the Montale, then I should love it.

thanks for the review! this sounds like something I will certainly want to try!!!

Well…. I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for something a lighter on the roses and a lot heavier on the rest of the notes. To me it smells kind of Rosine-ish. Not a criticism — I’m not enough of a rose fan to really fall in love, though.

Well, I like rose, and I’m always on the fence about POTL. I’m anxious to try this one!

  • 7. Marina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 9:16 am

Hmm hmm…don’t know what to expect, really. I guess I should just try and see. As long t smells nothing like POTL, it might have a chance :-D

I’m curious about the henna note, Not omething we often see. I’m searching for the right rose scent for spring. Maybe this can be it.

For anyone else who might have been concerned, as I was, about the use of real civet, I just got this response from them about it:
The component “Civet” (base) is a reconstruction comparable to nature.
    Huge relief!

A scent that resembles Montale Aoud Anything has to be good! Wasn’t sure I needed to try yet another rose frag, but this comparison made me sit up and take notice.

Chaya, it just doesn’t quite wow me from the first sniff. It’s not one of those WUFS scents, you know. ;) As for Eau Suave, A.Maze is much meatier rose, a bit sweeter, too.

Judith, you’ll like it, I think.

  • 13. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Elle, it’s a decent rose-saffron combo, just not quite as complex as POTL, maybe.

  • 14. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:23 pm

    Sara, report back! :)

  • 15. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:23 pm

March, I agree. While I don’t find it Rosine-ish, I do think it’s a bit too much rose, maybe.

  • 16. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:24 pm

    Patty, you’ll probably love it.

  • 17. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:24 pm

Marina, nothing like POTL, rest assured. ;)

  • 18. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:25 pm

Gaia, I don’t remember what henna smells like, so I didn’t pick it up here.

  • 19. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:25 pm

Elle, good to know! Thanks! I knew that 100% natural is not, in fact, 100%.

  • 20. Ina  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 1:26 pm

Minsun (what a lovely name!), this one isn’t very “aoud-ish”, just similar in character.

  • 21. Elle  |  January 22nd, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Update. Delicious. Head over heals in love. As deeply in love w/ this as I am w/ the original. Budget disaster looms in imminent future.
