Mini Poll

January 9th, 2007

A very short post today – a mini poll of two questions:

  • What’s the best perfume you’ve smelled in the last few days and why?
  • What’s the worst perfume you’ve smelled in the last few days and why?

My own answers: the best perfume I’ve smelled recently is the signature scent for the Lithuanian fashion designer, Juozas Statkevicius (or Josef Statkus) – a hip spicy incense. Review to come soon. The worst scent is probably Ensolleile Moi by Andre Gas (available at Beautyhabit now), a tiare based floral with a smothering effect. Both are initial impressions, with further testing necessary.

#1: Might be Alexander McQueen’s Kingdom which I got a spray sample of yesterday. I was prepared for the most FUNKY smelling cumin out there when I put my wrist up to my nose, but was instead welcomed by the most heavenly velvet like fragrance I’ve smelled in a while. I also drew immediate parallells to Comme des Garçons Odeur 71 (both when sniffing this and Etro’s Mahogany) which make me believe there is some cumin hiding within the CdG. Kingdom was a great surprise and will be tested a lot more in the coming days!

#2: Haven’t really tested anything real bad in the last few days. Mahogany didn’t really do it for me, but it is still an interesting experience I want to revisit to get a good and complete impression. An interesting wood with a lot of different facettes showing up, quite unlike the woods I’m familiar with, but not really what I’m after in a fragrance.

I totally agree with Statkevicius and I´m sure this incensey and boozy beauty will make her way to be famous:)
    Waiting for you review…

Worst…Cedre Sandarque PG. Beer and sugar:(

Best – no surprises here – Rousse.

Wrost – I resniffed it to make sure my nose wasn’t off the first time I tried it. It wasn’t. Sorry, but large scale NFM: Ambre Russe.

The best one was Miss Me, on my daughter’s skin, by Stella McC: very airy, happy , sweet (almondy) like, warm but something at the end that makes it more than baby smell. A naughty baby smell. Very feminine, mysterious actually, and in spite of all awful reviews.
The worst one was Musk Kublai Khan I had always dreamed of wearing! The first day I did, my husband thought our cat had pissed on my coat!

Best–Marina’s concotion: Messe de Minuit and Yatagan.

Worst: One of the Loree Rodkin Gothics. I think it was 2.

I can’t wait to hear about the mysterious Lithuanian!!

Best — Parfum de Merveilles. Who knew? (You did, I think.)

Worst — ack, that Indult thing, Manakara. It’s … criminal on me.

  • 7. greeneyes  |  January 9th, 2007 at 9:30 am

    Best…PdR Rose d’Ete.
Worst…although lovely in a normal “dose,” I don’t suggest that anyone spill an entire vial of YSL Opium Fleur de Shanghai all over oneself. ;P

  • 8. Marina  |  January 9th, 2007 at 9:48 am

Best – Fissore Cashmere for Mem
Worst…nothing comes to mind, not in the last couple of days anyway

  • 9. Gail S  |  January 9th, 2007 at 10:37 am

Best – Le Parfum de Therese. Not necessarily my favorite thing ever to smell, but I keep thinking about it when I’m not wearing it…

Worst – Soavissima by Parfumerie Generale. Have you ever been sick for a few days and not washed your hair? And then rubbed talcum powder through your scalp in a misguided attempt to improve the situation? Thats what this smells like.

  • 10. Gail S  |  January 9th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Please excuse me Parfumerie Generale, Soavissima is by Profumum.

  • 11. Patty  |  January 9th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Best — Pretty Princess from MDCI (it’s early in the year!)

Worst — yikes, I haven’t gotten hold of anything truly bad yet.

  • 12. Elle  |  January 9th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Best is Fath de Fath. Worst is some unknown, overapplied fruity scent worn by someone two rows away on the plane. GRRRR. To Hades w/ screening for weapons, there should be sensors for overapplied scents. Yep. I’m in a *mood*. :-)

  • 13. minette  |  January 9th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Best is Visa de Piguet in extrait – a rich concoction that reminds me of Femme, Arabie, MKK and Diorama in turns. And yet it’s very well-behaved and a touch powdery on my skin. Why it was discontinued, I do not know. Someone oughta bring it back.

Worst is the Cashmere Mist one of my colleagues insists on wearing. CM makes me pukey if I get too much of it up my nose.

  • 14. Flor  |  January 9th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

Best – Patou Joy. My sister wore it to a wedding and it was sooo beautiful! Roses and jasmin.
Worst – Ralph Hot. I don’t know what to say. It smells like a cocktail I drank in Mexico. I guess some people like that, not me.

  • 15. julia7  |  January 9th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Oh, I wrote to Juozas Statkevicius ages ago, asking for a sample. Nothing. Too bad since it’s sounds every bit as lovely as I expected it to be.

Best: Caron – Parfum Sacre (recieved ny sample today)

Worst: Les Nez – Unicorn Spell (turned completely sour on me yesterday, smelled like pickle gherkin)

  • 16. Gaia, the non-blonde  |  January 9th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Best- Aomassai by Parfumerie Generale. It made me very happy. Review coming soon.
Worst- Juicy Couture. I took a sniff while in Sephora. It puts the F in fruity .

  • 17. feelingpeachy  |  January 9th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Best: SL Cédre. I love the spicy/camphor clove and ceder opening, and its perfect when the smoothness of the tuberose takes over.

Worst: SL Fleurs d’Oranger: just too sharp and flowery on me. no richness, just annoyingly happy flowers.

  • 18. Flora  |  January 10th, 2007 at 12:08 am

Best – Sisley Soir de Lune , at least among those I do NOT own – now I gotta have it! (Among those that are actually mine, my new Lucien Lelong pour Femme – divine!)

Worst – Juicy Couture, first time sniffed at my local Macy’s, probably the last time as well unless I want to torture myself sometime. Egad.

  • 19. Tigs  |  January 10th, 2007 at 1:56 am

Best: So far a tie between Patou Cocktail and Donna Karan Chaos.

Worst: Armani something that I was encouraged to try by SA. Called, I think, City Glam Pour Homme.

  • 20. Cait  |  January 10th, 2007 at 5:16 am

Best: Maroc Pour Elle by Tauer Perfumes. I have been rediscovering it this evening and it keeps triggering some shred of a beautiful memory I can’t quite grasp. Also Gaultier2. With this and my recent love of West Side I believe I’m becoming an amber fiend.

Worst: Tendre Poison, the rootbeer one, on a coworker. I unloaded shoeboxes of my perfumes and now I have to live with the smell of them on people every day. Should have thought about that beforehand.

  • 21. patricia Seybold  |  January 10th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

Best: SienneL’Hiver by Eau d’Italie. I bought this a couple of months ago when it was first available in the US and I did not have the nerve to try it…also, weather too warm for this scent. Now, snow bound, I am crazy for this inscense, mysterious scent. This is a real journey for me….a floral-addicted girl!

Worst: a not so old bottle of Coco…the EDT. I think it has gone off. Thank goodness I sniffed first before splashing. Sigh.

  • 22. Victoria's Own  |  January 11th, 2007 at 1:17 am

Best: Divine L’Inspiratrice – Lovely and soft, Velvet Rope meets LV Musk.

Worst: – LesNez – The Unicorn Spell – Green beans. Need I say more?

  • 23. aliki  |  January 11th, 2007 at 8:53 am

ERRATUM: Miss Me is by Stella Cadente, and not Stella McCartney… sorry for the confusion, but I had sniffed Stella and MissMe on the same day.

  • 24. Cadence Commiphora  |  January 12th, 2007 at 1:54 pm

Best: Mitsouko. Finally dabbed on the legend for the first time yesterday. Goodness, It just kept changing and changing and changing…. remarkable….

Worst: Lou Lou, of which I bought a small sample for someone who used to wear it in the 90s. She’s happy, but on me it produced an instantaneous headache and wouldn’t scrub off, so I was stuck with it for hours. Gack….

  • 25. kewart  |  January 12th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

    Best : Eau d’Italie – simply stunning!

Worst : White Diamonds – yuck!!

  • 26. parisa  |  January 13th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Best: Chinatown by Bond 9…always a pleasure to reach for the bottle

Worst: West Broadway by Bond 9….my husband wears and I can’t stand the musk in it, plus, he applies it with a very HEAVY hand.

I will eventually have to hide WB and replace it with a more timid scent, for my sake and sanity:)

    Best – Coco Mademoiselle

Worst – Dior Poison (actually makes me want to hurl)
