Room Sprays

November 13th, 2006

Liquid KarlWhen I started this blog, I created a Home Scents category and wrote a few candle reviews. I’ve babbled about perfume so much since that it got completely neglected. To remedy that, today I want to talk about home scents as in home/room sprays. I’m not a huge room spray user but I do, however, have a few favorites, most recent ones being Bottega Veneta Intreccio No 1 by L’Artisan Parfumeur (which is said to recreate the scent of an old library, with notes of leather, incense, books), and another wonderful L’Artisan room spray – Bois d’Orient that also comes in a candle (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, walnut, pepper). I’ve also used Balsam by Agraria, and, believe it or not, Liquid Karl (cardamom, thyme, pepper, spices, frangipani, cocoa, crusty bread note, cedar, moss). The latter was purchased exactly two years ago in London at an H&M store which had it as an exclusive. I adored it so much back then, and wore it as perfume but it was later placed in my bathroom for lack of staying power. It does work amazingly well as a room spray, though, transforming the room into a bakery. No, that’s not why I put it in the bathroom (that would be utterly gross!) – it was totally unintentional. So, that’s about all I have for room sprays. I do prefer candles but I’ve heard people use room sprays as personal fragrance, so I’m exploring this new category. Do you have any favorite room sprays? Please share.

P.S. I promise I won’t write about those plug-in room fresheners tomorrow.

Diptyque – The Essence of John Galliano is, well, both my favorite room spray and only room spray I’ve tried. But it truely is gorgeous. Smoky to death with a bit of iris lingering in the back ground. I bought it to use as any other fragrance I have, so I have no idea how it actually works as a room spray :)

Oh, come on — those cute glade plug-ins with the fans that blow Tropikal Breezes all over your house? ;-)

I have a couple of room spreays, but I’m using them as perfume … and vice versa. I was using Fracas on the kids’ diaper pail for awhile … I know, that is So Wrong.

I am DYING to try Diptyque’s Opoponax room spray, to use as a perfume. I will buy it one of these days. I’m hoping it will be better than the somewhat disappointing Les Nereides Imperial Opoponax.

Well, as you know I like the first two you mentioned. I also have Diptyque Baies (as well as the candle), but I use that one *gasp* as a room spray! It wouldn’t work on me (or, I think, on you, as a personal fragrance). I went shopping a little while ago, though, with someone who loves room sprays. I know she like bought the Diptyque waxwood one (I liked it too; the 3rd member of our party thought it smelled like church pews) and some others. , , A number of people love John Galliano, but I prefer him as a candle.

    like bought? like, sorry!

Love those two scents, but I have the candles. Need to try the room sprays. I don’t use many room sprays other than the Frapins, which are infinitely better in sprays than candles (zero throw). Liquid Karl really would be a great room spray. I should use it when my MIL comes to visit so that when she asks what the scent is I could smilingly tell her and watch her facial expressions as she reacts to the name. :-)

I don’t have any room sprays to recommend that haven’t already been mentioned but I would like to mention 3 oils–Esteban Ambre, Lorenzo Villoresi Chypre and Orchidea–all three also smell terrific on skin.

    P.S. I promise I won’t write about those plug-in room fresheners tomorrow.

What, you didn’t like my idea??

I was in ScentBar this weekend and they had this fabulous stick-in-bottle thigy with room scent: Rosso Nobile by Dr Vranjes. It is truly gorgeous, berries and citrus and winey notes. Sadly it’s also $350 bucks, so I’ll be sticking to the plug-ins

No plug-ins? Well, okay! I need to try that L’Artisan one. I love the other room spray, the one that smells of Linden that March recommded, and that one sounds gorgeous. My DH is really starting to question my expenditures in the “Room fragrane” area. He though just my personal fragrance would be obsessive.

Um … Duh. This is the one lilyofbp sent me! I’m wearing it right now! (The L’artisan). I’m find the name veeery interesting because I didn’t read closely the first time, and the smell reminds me of a BV handbag more than a library.

  • 12. Tigs  |  November 13th, 2006 at 3:47 pm

As a librarian on maternity leave, that L’Artisan sounds great. (Although I work in a public library in a somewhat rough area of town, so my library roomspray would probably smell like stale smoke from Colts – what is it about teens that they must smoke Colts?!? – poor hygiene, sticky computer keyboards and glossy magazine paper.) I see Elle mentions the Frapins – I’ve been interested in Cellar. Anybody tried it?

  • 13. Twibbet  |  November 13th, 2006 at 7:57 pm

Hmm, yes, a library roomspray for my library would also involve poor hygiene, as well as disinfectant spray, goo-gone, stale coffee and sometimes popcorn or fish from the employees’ microwave. Yum. Oh well, I can dream of leather and incense…

Shifts, oh, I’ve been wanting to get that one for a while now! Thanks for reminding me. :) Also want the candle.

  • 15. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:27 pm

March, those are some classy diapers! LOL!

  • 16. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:28 pm

Newproducts, I’m lemming Opoponax myself! Especially that golden candle. Swoon.

  • 17. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:29 pm

Judith, it’s, like, so cool that you’re so into room sprays! ;)

  • 18. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:29 pm

Elle, you should really try that trick on your MIL. As for Frapins, those are just excellent as room sprays and personal fragrance. Another lemming.

  • 19. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:30 pm

Sara, I’ve heard so much about those LV oils. Must try! Thank you! Esteban sounds good, too.

  • 20. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:31 pm

Todd, let’s just say they don’t rock my world.

  • 21. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:31 pm

Tom, wah!!! It sounds divine. Must not sample.

  • 22. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:32 pm

Patty, I’m just starting out in room sprays myself! Wow, something new! ;)

  • 23. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:33 pm

March, it’s definitely leather. Very good leather, too.

  • 24. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:34 pm

Tigs, Frapin Cellar is stellar. Sorry, couldn’t resist. ;) As for your library description, it’d be perfect for another Demeter scent. ;)

  • 25. Ina  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:34 pm

Twibbet, what is it with our libraries nowadays! Shame. Maybe we should go there with this room spray to bring the scent back where it belongs. :)

  • 26. Tigs  |  November 13th, 2006 at 8:48 pm

Ah, the microwave popcorn scent. You don’t need a roomspray for that one, you just make a bag and it lingers in the air for days to torment the employees not on break. Twibbet, your library certainly sounds/smells like mine…

  • 27. Tom  |  November 16th, 2006 at 1:17 pm

Oooh- I hate that Microwave popcorn scent! Just for that reason!

Worse yet, we had someone on our floor who microwaved bacon. We finally had to make them stop- there were too many of us trying to control our diets for that to go on…

  • 28. Ina  |  November 16th, 2006 at 10:22 pm

    Bacon? At work???
