Favorite Notes

October 8th, 2006

Here I am again, running slightly behind, so no review today. Meanwhile, I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite perfume notes. I didn’t used to pay attention to notes, so the process of discovering what I like/dislike as well as learning more about the notes has been really fascinating. Here’s what rocks my world (or has potential to do so):

  • Amber
  • Incense
  • Myrrh
  • Benzoin
  • Iris/Orris
  • Ylang-Ylang
  • Leather
  • Tolu balsam
  • Cardamom/Coriander/Nutmeg/Cinnamon/Clove/Saffron
  • Labdanum
  • Honey
  • Rum
  • Agarwood
  • Opoponax
  • Tobacco
  • Plum
  • Vetiver

Oops! Didn’t realize the list would be this long! What are your favorite notes or what notes have you discovered recently?

I’m just going to steal your list since you pretty much covered my favs. The only one I might leave off is vetiver because it can occasionally scare me off by going the dreaded celery route. I would add on smoke, especially wood smoke.

  • 4. Judith  |  October 9th, 2006 at 7:23 am

Yeah, I like all these (and love smoke). I have recently been exploring vetivers, which I ignored for too long, and I’ve found many to love.

neroli, cedar wood, cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, plum, rose, leather, ambergris, musk, hawthorn, sandalwood, ebony, patchouli, bergamot, jasmine, gardenia, vanilla

I also like vetiver, but as Elle said, sometimes I don’t like the direction it takes.

    Talk about thunder-stealing…
“She had it coming, she had it coming, she only has herself to blame…”

You guys have the Chaya seal of approval [as if that would do you any good, for what it’s worth !]

    Applauds heartily…

It seems to me from the lists above that true perfumistas have pretty similar taste, in the direction of dark and incensey and nonfloral… Here’s mine, not too different either: amber, musk, leather, smoke, incense, patchouli, cardamom, nutmeg, saffron, cumin, ambergris, tea, coffee, booze, rhubarb, ginger and most woods.

I love lists! But immortelle, where are your fans today? I also hasten to add davana, dried grass or palm, carrot, clary sage and champaca.

Hay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Civet!!!!!!!!!!!! Oak Moss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had to get those in before the perfume gods strike me down and never let me smell those notes again as punishment for forgetting them. My only excuse is that I was writing early in the morning. Of course, now I have the exclamation point police after me…

  • 15. Tigs  |  October 9th, 2006 at 5:16 pm

Yes, and hay and oakmoss receive my votes as well!

Adding my apologies with Elle’s to the Perfume deities for forgetting hay, civet and (how could it be forgotten) oakmoss! I guess list looked just so good that I (coffee-less as well) assumed everything must be there.

  • 18. Ina  |  October 10th, 2006 at 10:46 am

Thanks, everyone, for your comments! It’s fascinating to read about your fave notes. I completely forgot about coffee, booze, hay, civet, wenge, hawthorne…
