Fall Is In The Air

August 31st, 2006

Golden Autumn. Village.Fall is in the air. I know, you probably think I’m losing it but I swear I smell fall. I smelled it very distinctly last night. I love fall. I love everything about it. Even the rain. But what makes it even more exciting is that I can wear my ultimate fall scents. Do you have ultimate fall scents? I do. By that I mean, they only get worn during fall months, and I’m not making this up. Sure, I wear all kinds of scents all year around, and my choices are usually not based on the season. However, there’re several that I practically do not touch other than in the fall. Oddly, this rule only applies to fall - not any other season. Because nothing compares to fall. Because life would not be the same without fall. Because I look forward to fall more than I look forward to any other season. It’s retrospective, contemplative, introspective, peaceful, glorious, and submissive.

But enough with serious stuff! My ultimate fall scents are:

Fumerie Turque by Serge Lutens - campfire, burning leaves, dirt, and a cup of hot black tea with honey. If you haven’t fallen under its spell yet, you really should do so soon.

Bois de Paradis by Parfums DelRae - tree bark and cinnamon. It’s mature and playful at the same time. I truly believe its beauty is revealed only in cold autumn air.

Ambre Narguile by Hermes - apple-cinnamon pastry with a glass of cognac. I must admit I haven’t actually tried this combo but that’s what I believe it smells like. Comforting and luxurious.

Oropuro by Laura Tonatto - a very cozy animalic amber-vanilla blend. My favorite vanilla for fall.

Maharadjah by Parfums de Nicolai - spicy lavender for those colder days of late fall. Reminiscent of the smell of upcoming winter holidays.

Tea For Two by L’Artisan Parfumeur - hot chai tea latte. I love chai tea but only in the fall. Tea For Two is just that in a bottle.

Poussiere de Rose by Parfums de Rosine - the ultimate rose for fall, with dried fruits and cinnamon. Velvety and dusty. A mature, elegant rose.

Do you have ultimate fall scents?

P.S. If you cannot yet smell fall in the air, the painting above should do the job for now. Golden Autumn. Village by Isaac Levitan.

Well, I would choose Amouage Ubar, Patou Sublime and Lucien Lelong Indiscret (and of course Caron Parfum Sacre for fall into winter), as fall essentials. They are all deep and intriguing, with a lot of character. For something a little lighter and somewhat austere, I would pick Serge Lutens Daim Blond. It is perfect for when one must be indoors and around other people, without the fragrance being too overpowering.

For a really special occasion, it’s time to bring out the Tauer Perfumes Le Maroc Pour Elle, whose intensity may be too much for some in the heat of summer, but watch out world now that it’s getting cooler!

I am sure here are many others!

Fall is my favorite season by far as well (at least emotionally - my body craves tropical weather year round). There are definitely scents which I think should be listed in the dictionary under the definition of fall, but I do wear them all year long since I always want to be reminded of that glorious season. Your list includes most of those scents, but I’d add on Kolnisch Juchten, Botrytis, Arabie, Opium parfum, CB’s smoke scents, Safran Troublant and SL Bois et Fruits (my ultimate fall scent).
Great choice of painting - I love Levitan to distraction.

It DOES feel like fall. It’s been very difficult here, because my summer scents feel wrong, but temperature-wise it’s still too hot.

Tea for Two, definitely. Lonestar Memories strikes me as a fall scent. Chergui. (Why does Serge Lutens seem so perfect in fall? I think it’s the liquor-y sweetness of so many of his scents…)

My odditiy — my tiny bottle of iPdF Arancia Dolce extrait, because I smelled it first in the fall in Florence. It takes me back immediately.

Fall is beautiful here (New England) and so are the scents that I love then. Some on your list, some on Elle’s, some additions:
Mitsouko, Le Labo Patchouli, Kolnisch Juchten, Fumerie Turque, Ambre Narguile, Opium (esp. parfum), Soir d’Orient, Tabac Blond, Encens et Lavande..

Everyone seems to love Bois de Paradis, but it’s over-sweet on me; I will try again in the Fall. Tea for Two starts out great, but dries down badly on me (confirmed by others who love this scent:) Oh, well, there are enough others I love for Fall; this list just scratched the surface.

I feel fall in the air too. Makes me depressed. :-) Yesterday I discovered a scent that I’ll be wearing a lot this fall and winter. Agraria Balsam. I also rediscovered Dzing!. Apart from them I’m sure I’ll be wearing lots of Folnisch Juchten, Cuir de Russie, Feminite du Bois and Bois et Fruits. The only good thing about fall (and winter) is the perfumes.

  • 6. Judith  |  August 31st, 2006 at 7:47 am

How could I forget Cuir de Russie parfum!!!! And 10 CC–I love that in Fall! Now I need to try Agraria Balsam!

You are right…fall is in teh air. Even though it’s been hot and humid here, I can feel it, and the changing of the light is really evident now. I can’t wait.

In the fall I used to switch to Nanette Lepore or EA Splendor, but since I started on my perfume sampling adventure last spring, I don’t know what the fall will bring. I have many new samples lined up to try especially for fall, and it’s funny that you mentioned Bois de Paradis because I just had that sample out the other night and it’s at the top of the “samples for fall” pile! I can’t even remember all I have: Serge Lutens Arabie, Creed Santal, Papardascha, iPdF Tobacco and Tberosa d’Autunno…the list goes on and on!

Reading Perfume-Smellin’ Things today — I ran upstairs and put on CB Burning Leaves and Gathering Apples — it is cool today, and rainy, and very fall-ish. They are perfect.

  • 10. Jenn  |  August 31st, 2006 at 9:06 am

I have definately been smelling a hint of Fall in the air; favorite scents for it Le Baiser du Dragon, Anne Pliska, Vanilla Cinnamon, Amorita, Amber, Un Bois Vanille.

  • 11. annE  |  August 31st, 2006 at 9:37 am

Yes, fall has definitely been in the air for the last week or so. It’s my favorite season as well, and Ina, your description certainly does justice to it!
There have been so many great fragrances mentioned, and I won’t list them all again, but some of my “fall only” favorites which haven’t been named yet are Jean Louis Scherrer, Ormonde, and Caron Alpona. So many others I will continure to wear into the winter, but these have a particularly autumnal appeal.
And it’s time to start changing my spring/summer fragrance wardrobe to fall/winter; I was caught off-guard this year by the unusually early cool weather here, and had none of them at hand. So I went hunting through my “off-season” boxes, and found a couple that I forgot I had! I love it when that happens. :)
Time to bring the sweaters upstairs and start scouting the farmers markets for early-season apples, too. ::::happy sigh::::

    Morning, annE-

Recognize the crazy lady from Barney’s, my dear?!
Nice to see you here, hope all is well with you…

  • 13. Judith  |  August 31st, 2006 at 9:48 am

Chaya,–Am I a “NE girl”? Well, I live in NE (pretty close to you, I suspect), and have for years, but I still consider myself a New Yorker!
PS If you want to get together and do some sniffing sometime, you can get my info from Ina.

  • 14. annE  |  August 31st, 2006 at 9:50 am

    Hi chaya,

Yes, thanks for the shout-out! Nice to see you here, too. :)

  • 15. Tom  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:24 am

I miss fall. We don’t get that here in SoCal- well, we sort of do, it’s called winter. Not quite the same thing. But every January the maple trees on Alden Drive change color and drop their leaves, so that’ll have to do. (I always wonder why they never plant the kind of trees in BH the streets are named after? The palms are on Beverly Drive, the maples are on Alden, there are camphor trees (http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/105834/) on Maple and jacarandas on Palm. Wierd.)

I’m excited by the rumor that Fumerie Turque is joining the export line for a while- I hope it happens soon!

  • 16. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:35 am

Flora, I’m yet to try Ubar and that Lelong. I love your other picks! Daim Blond is a fave of mine, too, but not quite ultimate for fall. :)

  • 17. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:35 am

Elle, I cannot believe I forgot about Kolnisch Juchten and Arabie! Especially Arabie! Wear it only in the fall.

  • 18. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:36 am

March, I was gonna say Chergui, too, but I recently tried it in summer heat, and I’m afraid it’s just that now - hot summer air scent.

  • 19. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:38 am

Marina! Stop it, now! For a lover of dark scents, you surprise me with your hatred of fall. ;) Please give it a chance this year, will ya? For me? Pretty please? And how could I forget Bois et Fruits!

  • 20. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:40 am

Judith, Cuir de Russie and Bois des Iles, definitely!

  • 21. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:40 am

Chaya, I love your list! Habanita! Of course!

  • 22. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:41 am

Greeneyes, Arabie is the ultimate fall scent, no doubt! :)

  • 23. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:42 am

Jenn, I was thinking about Anne Pliska, too. Especially in parfum!

  • 24. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:43 am

Anne, I’ll have to try the Scherrer! Oh, and how I crave fall apples! Must run to the farmers market today!

  • 25. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:44 am

Tom, those trees are gorgeous!!! And I’m beyond thrilled about Fumerie Turque!

  • 26. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 11:44 am

Oh, and March, those CBs are pefect for fall, I agree.

  • 27. Tommasina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 1:18 pm

I want to talk about fall scents; but first - OOH! How do you know Fumerie Turque is going to join the export line? And when? And for how long?

Have to run now as client arriving any moment - but shall look for reply with great excitement!

  • 28. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 1:48 pm

Tommasina, I heard about it earlier this year, I believe. Every year they make one exclusive scent export for a limited time, so this year it’s Fumerie Turque. I can’t wait!

  • 29. Andrea  |  August 31st, 2006 at 2:19 pm

    Hello Sisters-in-Scent!
(Chaya, you are too cool! ;-) )
Yup, days are getting golden here as well, and I enjoy the changing of seasons so much…
Anne… nice to see that someone likes good old JL Scherrer so much as I do! I can only recommend it Ina!
On my “to-sniff-list” for autumn will be definitely PG15 Ilang Ivohibe (if you in the mood for something more warm) and Montale Aromatic Lime (don,t be fooled - this is no second summer ananas&lime splish-splash).
By the way: has anyone experiences with S.I.P.?
Thank you for sharing your excellent autumn list!

  • 30. chaya ruchama  |  August 31st, 2006 at 5:43 pm

Andrea, I love Ilang Ivohibe, too! I’ve tried most SIPs, and I like a few but don’t own any. Very unique scents.

  • 32. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 5:51 pm

Chaya, CdG Incense series is definitely it for fall!

  • 33. greeneyes  |  August 31st, 2006 at 6:50 pm

Oh Ina! Add Jo Malone Pomegrante Noir to my list for fall…just got a bottle, and it will be perfect, perfect for the changing seasons. Thanks for reviewing it! Please send me $50 to cover my expenses. :D

  • 34. Ina  |  August 31st, 2006 at 6:54 pm

Greeneyes, definitely, Pom Noir is awesome! Um, I thought my review was enough help. ;)

  • 35. chaya ruchama  |  September 1st, 2006 at 5:40 am

Oh, Friends- let’s not forget TDC’s Jasmin de Nuit…

Someone really ought to review this one, because it will NEVER let you down, is incredibly comforting and lusciously oriental, lasts forever, and is a real classic…

    Elegant, warm,sillage with subtlety, womanly…
    WOOF!

  • 36. Ina  |  September 1st, 2006 at 1:21 pm

Chaya, I agree! I adore it, too. But it’s a spring scent for me. :)

[…] A couple of months ago I did a list of my ultimate fall scents, and since it’s practically winter (unfortunately), it’s time to put together a list of my ultimate winter perfumes. The list includes olfactory equivalents of wrapping yourself in a warm coat, scarf, gloves, and whatever it takes to stay sane during freezing months. In winter, I look for dense, solid, substantial perfumes, so no wonder most of them are heavy on spices and woods. Please share your own! […]
