Jacomo Silences
June 22nd, 2006
Today I’m wearing Silences by Jacomo. Victoria’s review of Silences on her blog, Bois de Jasmin, inspired me to track down this mysterious bottle and try the juice myself (which I promptly accomplished on ebay). I must say I haven’t been very lucky with most fragrances created in 1970s (with the exception of Magie Noire and that only in parfum). So I was slightly dreading the arrival of Silences picturing myself being smothered by a loud chypre. The bottle arrived yesterday. I ripped the cellophane open, briefly appreciated its sleek design, and anxiously sprayed some on my hand. Lo and behold, the earth, er, floor, shook beneath me as I was overcome by its stunning gorgeousness (I know this is probably redundant use of “stunning” but I swear that’s how I felt). First of all, a chypre. From the 70s. That I love. Secondly, it doesn’t smother me. Thirdly, I can wear it now, in this hot and humid weather. Beautiful! Enthralling! Glamorous!
Silences features the notes of galbanum, bergamot, orange blossom, lemon, orris, rose, lily of the valley, hyacinth, sandalwood, cedarwood, oakmoss, musk. It’s like a sprakly, lustrous version of Chanel 19, without that green earthiness.

LOL! Excellent and very funny review! But “Smothered by a loud chypre”?? Sigh. One day I’m hoping you will see the light and come over to the chypre camp.
I love the packaging on this and can’t wait to try it.

Thanks!
I could bet $100 you’ll love it but I won’t bet because I know I’m gonna lose it. Ha! I don’t know if what I just said makes much sense. Need more coffee.

Sounds nice! Even for a chypre. :O)

I am so happy that you fell in love with it! I think that it is one of the most beautiful fragrance, and very underappreciated at that. Such a stunning perfume!

Marina, you can find it dirt cheap on ebay. I got mine from Allshewants.

I wore Silences many years, before I took an active interest in fragrance. I have no recollection of how it smelled, only that I liked it. From your and Bois de Jasmin’s reviews, I must find this and sniff again. I am a fan of chypres, so it sounds right up my (current) alley.

Iris, as I said earlier, you can find this very cheap on ebay. You should definitely revisit it!

Wicked girl. I was trying to ignore victoria’s review and NOT order some of this, but if it’s a ’70s perfume you like, then I have a hunch it will suit me very nicley. Grrrr!

Patty, it will suit you very nicely, indeed!

I completely agree–it’s beautiful! NB: at least some of the lemmings V. creates are inexpensive; you have me craving Jalaine Patchouli and Vetiver now (bad, bad Ina:)!

Oh, but they’re so worth it!

I did it. I completely trusted you. I went to my favorite perfume shop (very kind and professional owners.. and generous with samples) and asked for Jacomo Silences (of course, with the wrong pronunciation, didn’t know it was french!). And they had some bottles spared! So I sniffed and bought it at once. And I suppose I also gained some points in their consideration: they don’t see often women my age walk in and ask for a perfume from the ’70s… until they find out I read your blog they might even think I understand something about perfumes
Well, this Silences is really a lovely chypre, so fresh, I really enjoy it..
Next suggestion?

Neeta, I’m so glad you liked it! Stay tuned, and there’ll be more suggestions.

[...] Bill Blass renders elegance in a seemingly simple interplay of galbanum, hyacinth, and lily of the valley. Apart from the initial sparkle of neroli, the scent is quite linear and a touch aldehydic. It’s the resurrection of the 70s or their modern interpretation, bringing to mind such scents as Fidji by Guy Laroche, Ivoire by Balmain, Silences by Jacomo. It is the scent of sheer, glossy fabrics and pastel colors. Bill Blass is a perfect scent to welcome spring – its luminous character makes you think happy thoughts. I don’t see myself wearing it yet, simply because I have not developed a strong enough taste for galbanum and hyacinth based scents. I do recommend trying it, however. It might be an instant love for you. [...]
