Montale Aoud Damascus

June 8th, 2006

Aoud DamascusToday I’m wearing Aoud Damascus by Montale. Oh, how I love this! One of my favorite rose perfumes ever. I wasn’t able to find much information about the notes, other than the general description: “All the refinement of the Arabian Aoud, associated with acidulous Damascan roses, enhanced by Oliban pearls and sparkling Gurgum.” Forgive me for my ignorance, but what exactly “sparkling Gurgum” is? I mostly smell a sultry combination of rose and aoud but it’s not sharp or medicinal. It’s soft and well-rounded, with a slight metallic undertone. It’s unlike any other rose perfume I’ve smelled. It has an excellent staying power and not so excellent price.

Aoud Damascus is available at Suravionline, Aedes, Parfumsraffy, The Perfume Shoppe, and directly from Montale online shop.

Love Montale’s aouds. This one to me is just a velvety, rich rose - definitely don’t get a medicinal vibe. Good thing that The Perfume Shoppe has the smaller sizes of the aouds. A 3.4 oz. bottle would last 50+ years for me. As it is, a 1.7 oz. seems more than sufficient.

This is beautiful, although Aoud Rose Petales works better on me. Nasrin at the Perfume Shoppe (where I happily sprayed them all) said that it had to do with my chemistry; she prefers Damascus on herself, but agreed that Rose Petals was the best on me (with Queen Rose as a close second). I also admit to a liking (well, more than that really) for Aoud Cuir d’Arabie, which is my husband’s favorite fragrance, and which smells almost as good on me (although many people seem to hate it:).

Elle, yes, the smaller size is a life-saver! ;)

Judith, I love Aoud Rose Petals, too, but I find it a bit more medicinal in top notes and more metalic in the drydown. I can’t recall if I’ve smelled Queen Rose. Cuir D’Arabie is great, too.

all this aoud Montale talk, you’re killing me! :) I’ve tried to stay away from these 4ever.

A-ha! You can’t hide any longer! The aouds are coming to get you! ;) Seriously, though. They’re SO worth trying!

I really like this one as well. I got a sample package a few weeks ago with Aoud Damascus included. This one was a truly soft and energizing breeze to wear for me, which sounds unlikely considering there is oud here (and from my limited exposure to that note, it sure hasn’t been that way before). This one might be, together with Soleil de Capri and Wood & Spices, the first Montales I’ll purchase.

Rose and aoud is such a beautiful combination, isn’t it? I haven’t been lucky with many Montales and so far have liked only two, Black Aoud and Oud Cuir Arabie…oh, and Sweet Oriental Dream, but I am over that one now :-)

Shifts, Aoud Damascus is the only Montale aoud that works for me, too. I also like Aoud Rose Petals. You should try that one if you haven’t already.

So, are you saying you’ve tried this and still didn’t like? ;) I got over Sweet Oriental Dream pretty quick, too.

Gurgum is another name for saffron (combined with with some Tibetan herbs).
