Perfume Review: Jalaine Vetiver

June 8th, 2006

Jalaine VetiverAs I mentioned in my review of Yosh Ginger Ciao, most perfume oils tend to turn on my skin. As soon as they hit the drydown stage, I get a wet dough note. I’m not quite sure why that happens, other than it must have something to do with the quality of the ingredients. The only two perfume oil lines (so far) that spare me from the doughyness are Yosh and Jalaine.

Jalaine Vetiver is one of my favorites from the line. When I first smelled it, I was overcome by how much it reminded me of the smell of fresh paint, and I almost dismissed it. Never dismiss a fragrance after only one application - that should be the rule of any perfume admirer. I’m glad I didn’t because as soon as I tried it again, I was smitten.

Jalaine Vetiver is said to have the notes of vetiver, Tunisian patchouli, sandalwood, amber, and musk. It’s not your typical green, earthy vetiver. It starts out with a blast of sharp, soapy vetiver that’s almost intimidating. I presume it’s the musk that gives it a soapy quality. It softens quite a bit in the drydown, however, with hints of patchouli and amber. It’s a rich blend that lasts for hours. I don’t own a bottle of this because I’ve been using my sample that’s still half full, and I got it over a year ago. It’s so potent I only need a couple of drops.

Jalaine Vetiver can be purchased at Luckyscent and Aedes.

    INa,
You say many oils smell on you like wet dough; on my skin they turn into “wet cardboard”…pretty close, I think. And I mean most oils do that, even the most expensive of them. Such a shame.

But this…Vetiver! Ooh, I want to try that. Thank you so much for the review.

Yes, wet dough, wet cardboard - it’s definitely something wet. ;) This one might very well convert you, my dear. ;)

This and Patchouli are my favorite Jalaines. It’s an incredilby grounding and comforting scent. Which makes me wonder why I haven’t worn it for an eternity now. I don’t think it would appeal to someone who wants a crisp vetiver or a mossy one - the amber she uses in almost everything makes this richer and sweeter than vetivers in those categories.

Yes, I totally agree. There’s nothing crisp or mossy here. And, yes, I agree again, you must wear it again soon. ;)

I sometimes have that reaction with oils too…. they smell stale, or yeasty. After playing with at least 75 different musk oils I want to say that it might be musk, a certain one commonly used by perfumers? or it could be the base oil itself. I would venture to guess it is the base oil that the musk is in…not that it helps us any!! We still have to wear them before we’ll know. Everyone seems to use the musks in their perfumes and perfume oils, whether they list them as notes or not, and they come out in the base/dry down. I threw away about twenty musk oils from my stash just this week because I hated the dry downs. Just a thought.

C., it’s an interesting point. I tend to think it’s the base oil because most oils can smell wonderful on me but the base is what makes them doughy. I wonder if it does have something to do with musk. Maybe I should ask Yosh what she uses. :)

[…] I’m generally not a lover of perfume oils. As I said in one of my previous posts, most oils tend to turn on my skin, in spite of how gorgeous they might be in top notes. I have tried quite a few, of various price ranges, and have concluded that in order for a perfume oil to work, it has to contain excellent quality ingredients, especially in the base. The two brands that fall into this category are Jalaine and Yosh. I have already raved briefly about one Yosh creation, Ginger Ciao, and one Jalaine creation, Vetiver. Today I’d like to rave about yet another Yosh stunner, Phenomenon. […]

[…] Vetiver - I’ve already raved about Vetiver here. I’ll just add that there’s nothing like it out there. It’s absolutely mesmerizing! […]
